What was your problem on the 2nd & 3rd ones?

Unknown said...

like i know how to find the derivative and all that and how to plug it in but when i start multiplyin it out and cancellin stuff out i get weird answers!! can i cancel things out on the top and bottom if im adding and subtracting?!

Matt Hickman said...

Could you give me a specific example?

ok on #14 the problem is f(x)=x^3+3x+2/x^2-1 well when i foil all that out and cancel stuff out on the top i get x^4-6x^2-4x-3/(x^2-1)^2 can i leave it like that? or do i need to foil the bottom and cancel out stuff with the top?!

Matt Hickman said...

Foiling out the bottom won't let you cancel stuff on the top. The only way you could cancel would be if you factored the top and had factors in common with the bottom.

x^4-6x^2-4x-3/(x^2-1)^2 is the correct answer.

oh sweet!! well on 15 i got an answer then when i looked in the back to check myself it had all this crazy stuff and some random answer that was totally different from wat i got. so i wrote the answer down and tried to work backwards and see if i could get to a step that i had done b4 but nothing matched up and im sure that i did it right

Some things cancel out on #15. x^2-1 = (x-1)(x+1).

oh ok cool!! welp thats all i needed help with!! im off to bed!! thanks!!! toodles!!

if you have just an X, what is its prime? 1 or 1X?

The derivative of x is 1.
